This bookwork is a response to the following excerpt from Italo Calvino’s novel “Invisible Cities” translated by William Weaver:
““The empire is being crushed by its own weight,” Kublai thinks, and in his dreams now cities light as kites appear, pierced cities like laces, cities as transparent as mosquito netting, cities like leaves’ veins…filigree cities to be seen through their opaque and fictitious thickness.”

Altered Book in the "Regenerator II" collection at the University of the West of England showing the power of Time. Original book title: "Bridget Jones Diary" by Helen Fielding I named the piece "Time Burns Us" . This discarded 1997 paperback edition of Bridget Jones Diary was certainly showing its age and the pages were turning yellow. As a diary is a record of the passing of time, how apt that the passage of time was already changing this book. The yellowing pages were oxidising, slowly burning in fact and being consumed by Time. I am reminded of the Hindu Goddess Kali who is associated with eternal energy. The name Kali comes from kāla, which means black, time, death. Kali is considered the goddess of time and change. Various Shakta Hindu cosmologies, as well as Shakta Tantric beliefs, worship her as the ultimate reality or Brahman. She is also revered as Bhavatarini literally "redeemer of the universe"). Comparatively recent devotional movements largely conceive Kali as a benevolent mother goddess.
Inside my altered book.
Using the transformative element of fire I continued to creatively burn through some of the pages. This resulted in certain words being revealed - “Disintegration”, “unexplained mystery”, “beginnings”, “0”. I understand that the individual identies of both sperm and ovum are sacrificed and transformed to form new life.
